Overview of the vision:

The Care Village has been envisioned to be a refuge for people who wrestle with addiction, mental or physical illness, who have no place to turn for help and who may find themselves alone, living on the street.

Located in a rural setting in northern BC, the Care Village offers short and long-term programs for recovery, healing and growth. The community setting provides a safe haven to start the process of healing and reintegration, by incorporating therapy and education, social, life and vocation skills.

Our vision is for people to find a renewed sense of hope and purpose, and know they are loved and accepted unconditionally.

As a place for all people, regardless of background, financial status or spiritual beliefs, the Care Village is a place of safety for those who are wounded and broken from disconnected relationships, mental or physical illness or seeking recovery from various addictions and substance abuse.

Asia Bibi, a wife and mother, used these words to defend her faith against mocking co-workers who tried to make her convert to Islam. She was later convicted of blasphemy and sentenced to death.

In Pakistan, more than 150,000 Christians have signed a petition demanding justice for persecution victims, including Asia Bibi. Now you can join with The Voice of the Martyrs and our Pakistani brothers and sisters in a call for mercy. We hope to gather 1 million signatures on behalf of our sister Asia, who now sits in prison awaiting the Lahore High Court’s ruling on her appeal.

Famine in the Horn of Africa: How to help

A list of charitable organizations fighting famine and drought in the Horn of Africa

More than 11 million people in the Horn of Africa require food assistance due to the region’s worst drought in half a century, the United Nations says.

The UN says that famine exists in two regions of southern Somalia, southern Bakool and Lower Shabelle. Across the country, nearly half of the Somali population — 3.7 million people — are now in crisis, of whom an estimated 2.8 million people are in the south.

But parts of Kenya and Ethiopia are also in crisis.

Here are some key organizations that are providing aid in the region.

UNICEF
UNICEF, the UN’s children’s organization, and its partners need more money to aid children in the Horn of Africa in the coming months. Immediate measures include child immunization campaigns and water and sanitation services to ward off disease.

Text FOOD to UNICEF (864233) to donate $10, enough to feed a child for 10 days or provide 321 sachets of nutrient powder to boost infant survival and development, the aid group says.

International Committee of the Red Cross
Red Cross has launched the East Africa Drought Appeal 2011 to provide emergency relief, including food, water and health assistance.

Make donations online at www.redcross.org.au or by calling 1-800-811-700.

Doctors Without Borders
In Dadaab, Kenya, Doctors Without Borders says it is treating more than 2,400 children in its ambulatory therapeutic feeding program and 130 children in its inpatient therapeutic feeding center. An additional 5,047 children with moderate acute malnutrition are enrolled in a supplementary feeding program. There are now around 10,000 people in the organization’s feeding program in the Dadaab camp.

Donate here or by calling 1-888-392-0392.

The World Food Programme
The World Food Programme said it is reaching 1.5 million people in Somalia now, and is scaling up to reach 2.2 million more in the previously inaccessible south of the country. It says airlifts to Mogadishu will start within a few days to bring in special nutritious foods for malnourished children.

Donate $10 by texting the word AID to 27722 or make a donation online

The International Rescue Committee
In drought-wracked central Somalia, the International Rescue Committee is giving cash and other assistance to households whose livestock, pastures and farmland have been destroyed. In Kenya’s refugee camps, the organization says, it is providing medical screenings and referrals for new arrivals at reception centers where they also receive food and basic supplies.
Oxfam International
Oxfam said it is responding to the crisis by providing water, sanitation services, food and cash. The aim is to reach at least 3 million people, including 700,000 in Ethiopia, 1.3 million in Kenya, and 500,000 in Somalia.

I found a new non-profit organization, a Christian ministry, called World Relief, which helps the vulnerable globally and fights to see the end of every devastating reality from hunger to human trafficking to gender-based violence to displacement of refugees.

The volunteer opportunites and internships are domestic and abroad and there are so many to choose from. I cannot travel to volunteer right now, but maybe in the future. I would LOVE to. And I know many who would too. In all honesty, it’s not easy though. Giving of time, money and energy, and pushing wants and comforts aside. But can you imagine how rewarding? To work and give directly? And even if you can’t, they really need prayer.

For right now, I’m going to donate and make sure those around me are made aware, are educated. That everyone knows more and more each day about the realities of the vulnerable. Don’t get overwhelmed by the vast amounts of space and distance between yourself and those in need. Don’t get overwhelmed by statistics. And don’t let them stop you from learning and doing and giving. Even a little.

“If you can’t feed 100 people, just feed one.”

Mother Teresa

Just 259 more people are needed to give just $5 for the World Food Programme to reach it’s goal of $100,000.

Why does Ethiopia need your help?

The people of Ethiopia are struggling to survive a recent drought and high food prices. Every dollar makes a difference for the children who go to bed hungry each night.

Today, thanks to a generous matching gift from our partner DSM, your gift will go TWICE as far to end child hunger in Ethiopia! For many children, a WFP school meal is the only meal they’ll eat all day. You can help us feed – and educate – even more.

Be one of the 259.

A note of thanksgiving and praise for the amazing launch of the Care Bus last week. It was truly uplifting to see the wonderful response to the presence of the bus. One gentleman I saw, who recently became homeless, was so appreciative, saying “this is a great idea” and how blessed he was that NightShift could give him some vitamins. He was someone who tried to look after his health through supplements but wasn’t sure how he’d be able to do so now. I was able to support him with some health teaching and he was also interested in a referral. It was great to see the whole RV in use, including the counselling area.

I was so impressed with the great team work, with everyone pitching in and serving, and I could really feel the prayer support. Mike was such a blessing, as he greeted and organized people waiting to see a nurse or counsellor, he truly exudes the love of Christ and care for the people.

Another man I saw had quite a few health issues and wondered if we had antihistamines for his allergies; although we didn’t I was able to give some teaching to offer help with his issues. He was quite underweight, but shared how he had put on 20 lbs since receiving meals at NightShift! He was also thankful for vitamins he received. If we could get donations of high cal protein drinks like Ensure or Boost many like him would experience a very positive effect on their physical health. Near the end of our time he told me he was having some chronic pain in his body, especially his shoulder. When I asked him if he would like me to pray for him, he was very happy for me to do so, and after we prayed he said the pain was gone from his shoulder – PTL – and I told him that was Jesus.

I saw the other nurses providing foot care on a gentleman and providing him with clean socks, they were being the hands and feet of Christ as they looked after his need. He appeared to be very happy and wanted to chat as others did, too.

I really sensed the love and peace of God in the bus and all the people coming in seemed to be blessed and quite a few talked about coming back. PTL for the launch of the Care Bus and as we show His love in not only words but actions, I believe the Lord will use us to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness the prisoners. l Is 61:1

Blessings,
Barb

[I’m a part of this organization and I’ve started helping out feed the homeless and street people in our community two weeks ago. All I can say is that, it’s a great place to be in. The whole team is just passionate about the cause and you can tell that they’re doing it for the Lord. I can’t wait to share more time with them, and hopefully some of my friends would come out and join. I encourage you to also help out your local communities by finding nonprofit organizations like NightShift Street Ministries. There are people out there who are hurting, hungry, and lonely. Share Jesus’ love to them. - Blessy]

sketchmedesire:

By Tara Teng on Jun 1, 2011 7:28 PM

Remember the days when we were excited to get mail? You know, real mail….the letter kind, written to you from friends or family members, not from banks or credit card companies. Mail that arrived in an envelope with a stamp on it… letters that had travelled across the country or half way across the world to reach you from someone who cares about you and was thinking of you.

I miss that kind of mail. It always makes me feel so special and worthwhile when someone takes the time to hand-write me a letter and mail it to me. I imagine that everyone in the world feels the same way, especially a Dalit child that has been told that his or her life doesn’t matter… it must mean the world to them if someone takes the time to speak words of love and affirmation into their lives.

Dalit children are precious, precious children who have sadly, always been told that they are less than valuable, sub-human and “untouchable” by because of the traditional chaste system in India. But with education and empowerment- by investing the time to tell each child that they are valuable, worthwhile and capable of making a positive impact on the world- we can remind each child of their immeasurable worth!

Words of encouragement can bring life to a child. Tell a child that he or she can make a difference in the world and they will.

Because of this I am organizing a letter writing campaign and I need YOUR help to do it. There are 700 Dalit children to write letters to…and only one of me. If you believe that a little bit of love and encouragement can be multiplied into eternal impact for a child, I ask you to help me by taking a little bit of time to write a letter to a Dalit child.

Not sure what to write? Here are two letters written by Dalit children to their friends in Canada…

Dear friend in Canada,

Thank you very much for your letter and wishes. I will celebrate Christmas with my family. My father has taken new dress for me. I feel very happy. I like to go to school.

By Felix, Grade One

Or this one..

Hai,

I received your greetings. Happy to see the words. I continue to pray for you and your family in the coming year, you will have more peace and prosperity in this world. I pray to God.

Bless you,

Yours lovingly, Suganya, Grade Six

If you feel moved to write a letter of response back to these incredible Dalit children, please address the letter as “Dear friend in India” and sign it as “Your friend in Canada/North America, __________” .

You can hand-write or type your letters, put them on the back of a postcard or email them to me attarat@dalitfreedom.net

Snail Mail can be sent to:

P.O. Box 45645, RPO Sunnyside
Surrey BC V4A 9N3 Canada

Write a letter, draw a picture, send a photo…but most of all- send LOVE.

(Surrey, BC, Canada)

This is a great organization that serves the homeless in my local area (Surrey, BC). I personally support them and I’m in the process of becoming a volunteer for their street team.

WEBSITE: NightShift Street Ministries

The information below is taken directly from the site’s “About” page:

NightShift Street Ministries is a registered, not-for-profit society (#85203 8942 RR0001) that has been serving people in Surrey, BC (Canada), since January 2004.

Meals are prepared by local churches or donated through corporate sponsors and served by volunteers, who also offer friendship, hope, spiritual guidance, clothing and personal care kits to people in need. We operate 365 days a year, whatever the weather, because every day matters.

It is our conviction that every man, woman and child deserves to be treated with love, respect and dignity, regardless of individual circumstances.

We hope to bring healing, wholeness and freedom to those caught in the addictive cycle of poverty and addictions, and to support those seeking a way to exit the streets. By offering a continuum of services, there is consistency where otherwise there would be none.

What I love about them is their vision and their dependence on God’s provision! They started from a small, cold room with a funky carpet, taking people in during a snow storm to provide shelter and protection for them while feeding them peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! It might not seem a lot, but I bet for those shivering souls, it meant the world to them. They battled through tough and dangerous times, experienced the lack of a place to continue their ministry, but they never gave up. I love their determination and true compassion for the needy - something that can only be received from Jesus Christ.

Seven years later, they have their own building (and an awesome office/counseling centre - Care Centre), a thrift store whose proceeds go to the organization, and a Care Bus (mobile care and counseling office) to accompany their mobile soup kitchen and clothing van. God’s miracle, indeed!

If you’d like to see God’s work firsthand, I encourage you to involve yourself in ministries like this.

SAVE PALAWAN MOVEMENT – SAY NO TO MINING

The Save Palawan Movement, a multi-sectoral coalition of concerned environmental, legal religious and other civic groups launched the “No to Mining in Palawan” signature campaign on February 3rd, 2011 in the hope of putting an end to mining activities in Palawan, known as the Philippines’ Last Ecological Frontier.

The campaign aims to raise ten million signatures to deliver a strong message to the Philippine and Palawan governments so that they would finally say no to mining in Palawan and help protect one of the Philippines’ last remaining treasures.

Present at the launch were ABS-CBN Foundation Managing Director Gina Lopez, Palawan Mayor Edward Hagedorn, “running priest” Fr. Robert Reyes, environment leaders Clemente Bautista (Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment) and Atty. Jose Andres Canivel (Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation), and Rhodora Angela Ferrer of the Catholica Educational Association of the Philippines.

They were joined by Kabang Kalikasan ng Pilipinas (WWF-Philippines) president Jose Lorenzo Tan, country director for Conservation International Romy Trono, Atty. Gerthie Mayo-Anda of Environmental Legal Asistance Center, executive director of Palawan NGO Network Inc. Atty Bobby Chan, Tanggol Kalikasan executive director Atty. Rolly Bisquera–Sheen, Alyansa Tigil Mina national coordinator Jaybee Garganera and various leaders of the environmental movement in the country.

The ten million signature campaign came about after the killing of Dr. Gerardo “Doc Gerry” Ortega, a civic leader who championed the protection of Palawan’s rich biodiversity and an outspoken critic of mining operations in Palawan.

Love 146 Launched New Campaign “CAN YOU SEE ME” To Raise Awareness Against #ChildTrafficking

West end stars and dancers from an array of West End musicals including We Will Rock You, Dirty Dancing, Mamma Mia!, Grease, Wicked, Love Never Dies, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Wizard of Oz, and the English National Ballet held a flash mob in Trafalgar square to protest against child trafficking. The singers and stars performed a routine to a specially arranged track by Annie Lennox to highlight the shocking fact that child trafficking is a major problem in Britain.

Christian Elliott, @ChristianElliot Love146.org “Can You See Me” Campaign Director said: “Many UK citizens do not believe that child trafficking is a problem in their own neighbourhood and that it’s only a problem in less developed countries. This is simply not true. In the UK there are boys and girls from as young as 11 being trafficked into Britain from all over the world. They rapidly become victims of exploitation and are incredibly vulnerable. We must unite and play our part in making this abhorrent crime history.”

Rachel Tucker, star of West End hit Wicked said: All of us were shocked to hear the terrible fate of children even in our home towns and cities. This is our way of trying to raise awareness, and getting people behind love146’s campaign to make a real difference to some of the most damaged children in the country.”

A video from this campaign will soon be released.

“Justice at its best is love correcting everything...

LOVE146

“Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love.” Martin Luther King Jr.

In September 2002, Love146 Co-Founders Rob Morris, Lamont Hiebert, Desirea Rodgers and Caroline Hahm went on an exploratory trip to SE Asia to determine how they could serve in the fight against child sex trafficking. In brothels they saw young children being sold for sex. In safehomes they witnessed the miracle of restoration as they sang and danced with survivors. From that first trip, the spark of abolition was ignited.

It was in Thailand, where our co-founders encountered a child with the #146, that our work began.

“We found ourselves standing shoulder to shoulder with predators in a small room, looking at little girls through a pane of glass. All of the girls wore red dresses with a number pinned to their dress for identification. They sat, blankly watching cartoons on TV. They were vacant, shells of what a child should be. There was no light in their eyes, no life left. Their light had been taken from them. These children…raped each night… seven, ten, fifteen times every night. They were so young. Thirteen, eleven… it was hard to tell. Sorrow covered their faces with nothingness. Except one girl. One girl who wouldn’t watch the cartoons. Her number was 146. She was looking beyond the glass. She was staring out at us, with a piercing gaze. There was still fight left in her eyes. There was still life left in this girl…

“…All of these emotions begin to wreck you. Break you. It is agony. It is aching. It is grief. It is sorrow. The reaction is intuitive, instinctive. It is visceral. It releases a wailing cry inside of you. It elicits gut-level indignation. It is unbearable. I remember wanting to break through the glass. To take her away from that place. To scoop up as many of them as I could into my arms. To take all of them away. I wanted to break through the glass to tell her to keep fighting. To not give up. To tell her that we were coming for her…”

“Because we went in as part of an ongoing, undercover investigation on this particular brothel, we were unable to immediately respond. Evidence had to be collected in order to bring about a raid, and eventually justice on those running the brothel. It is an immensely difficult problem when an immediate response cannot address an emergency. Some time later, there was a raid on this brothel and children were rescued. But the girl who wore #146 was no longer there. We do not know what happened to her, but we will never forget her. She changed the course of all of our lives.” -Rob Morris, President and Co-founder

Although the 150 million children living on the Third World’s streets may be hidden from the public eye, the global economy is always watching with keen interest. In Kitale, Kenya, like countless other towns, many street children have found comfort from their hunger pains by becoming accidental consumers. In sunlit corners, they choke up the little money they have to buy the same glue that the rest of the world uses to hold its shoes together. Only these children are barefoot. With bottles constantly perched at their mouths, they breathe in the toxic fumes until they pass out or fall asleep forever. This is their timely story.

Equally naturalistic and investigative, “Glue Boys” contemplates the future of the world’s estimated 150 million street children and documents the day-to-day plight of a handful in Kitale. It also unveils the distribution chain of their addiction to sniffing glue, from the small-time street dealers who facilitate it, to the authorities who enable it, to the massive multinational corporations that profit from it. Not overlooking the deeply entrenched reality of the developing world, the film presents the illicit adhesives market with a sense of urgency and intricacy, bringing awareness to a growing global giant but also providing a framework for change.

This is Caroline. Beautiful smile, right?...

thehopemovement:

This is Caroline. Beautiful smile, right? She’s smiling because she’s drinking clean water for the first time. She used to walk three hours every day to fetch dirty water. But not anymore. Her village just got a well. Clean water will change everything for Caroline and her community. For every Caroline, there are millions more children hoping to smile like that. Almost a billion people on the planet don’t have clean water right now. Who knows how many people you will impact. This is where it begins. Donate a dollar or more to my campaign. And smile. Because what you do here changes lives.

Donating any amount whatsoever will, just as well as help save a life, grant you an advertisement on The Hope Movement page.

Act now, and please let me know when you do.
